Belogradchik rocks

The fortress of Belogradchik has existed since Roman times, when the romans built very important strategic roads. The aim was to achieve greater control and security through the fortress walls.
In the partition of the Roman Empire in 395, the Balkan lands came within Byzantium. At the end of the 7th century the Belogradchik fortress fell into the territory of the newly created Bulgarian state. The fortress of Belogradchik has three separate yards, with a total area of 10,210 square meters, and one fortification. The fortress walls can still see rifles and three bastions and cannons. The highest point of the fortress, called First plate, reveals beautiful views of the Balkan Mountains.
The region is very popular with tourists because of the beauty of the Belogradchik Rocks and the numerous historical sites. Not far from Belogradchik is the Magurata (Rabishka Cave), where are preserved rock paintings dating from different historical eras.
